After College Job Search Resource for CMU-SHPE



Employment Events held by SHPE:

• Info Sessions - many companies contact us and ask to hold information sessions with our membership. These information sessions usually are from company recruiters and past CMU alumni who are very focused on hiring from our student population because of their talent and diverse backgrounds. These events will be emailed out to our mailing list as they are planned.


• Corporate Mixer - this event is usually paired with other engineering organizations on campus (for example, NSBE) where companies send 1-2 recruiters to one event. Students and recruiters then partake in "speed networking" where they rotate around tables to meet different recruiters. Afterwards, students and recruiters have the chance to mingle and follow up. Our fall Mixer focuses on students searching for full-time opportunities and the spring Mixer will focus on internship opportunities. A diverse array of companies attend from all engineering fields.


• Interview Gurus - this is a year long initiative provided to students by other students. There will be a designated interview "guru" who will be the contact for a certain industry/major. Any student who has an upcoming interview in that field can contact the guru and schedule a mock interview, Q&A session, or just ask for any study materials or pointers. Our current gurus are:

• Resume Help Sessions - Sometimes sponsored by a company, these sessions allow students to either fix up their resumes or to get help in starting their resumes. Presenting an excellent resume is the first step in procuring a job or internship, which is why this event is very important to those students who are just starting out on creating a resume. Also, if you would like to schedule one-on-one resume critiques with an Elected Board member, please contact any of them


• Conferences - Our two biggest events of the year are our regional conference, the Eastern Technical and Career Conference (ETCC), and our national conference, the National Technical and Career Conference (NTCC). These events are 3-5 days in length in a city other than Pittsburgh. Students who attend have access to workshops, graduate school fairs, and a career fair that is similar to TOC. These conferences prove very useful for our students because they are outside CMU and students stand out much more when they say they are from CMU and are competing with students from less presitigous universities. Many, if not all, of our members who attend leave with at least one interview and some even with offers.

The Sponsors for Education Opportunity is one of the most presitigous organizations to be affiliated with in Wall Street. If you become a SEO intern, you get internships every summer with financial firms in Wall Street, in either business or IT fields. In addition, you get amazing connections with SEO alums and with mulitple executives in your desired field. We're telling you this because SEO personally contacted us, telling us they want more SHPE involvement. If anyone is interested, going through us can be a much more successful and expedient route than tackling this on your own.
